The Cost Of Living In Belize: Can You Afford To Live Here?

The cost of living in Belize is an important figure to know. The answer is not as simple and straightforward as you may like!In fact, it can be very difficult to know what you will spend on a monthly basis. The reason for this is because of the overall difference in costs depending on where you are located and the type of lifestyle that you plan to live.

In high luxury, for two people, living in a location like Ambergris Caye, a very popular, tourist area, you will live spend several thousand per month on housing, food, cable television and entertainment.

Here an estimate would be between $2000 and $3000, depending on the extravagant that you are after, including a large house with several bedrooms.

On the other hand, if you lived in a small house in Cayo and did not have all of the amenities, and ate local foods you would probably spend about $500 a month in total costs. Most people that do come to stay here will look for something in the middle.

Our Experience:
In Shanghai we lived in a very cheap apartment that cost around $400 per month. The location was great, but the windows on the apartment were not suited to the climate. Our cheap apartment was often very cold in the winter, making it quite uncomfortable. We like to stretch our money as much as possible, but sometimes you really need to look at the lifestyle that you’re living and if it’s worth it.

A good way to consider cost of living in Belize is to consider the style of life that you plan to live.If you plan to live like locals in Belize, you would do well to have a spending income of about $200 a week. That’s because, the weekly wage here, ranges from $100 to $200 a week. Many of those in Belize do live well, though not in luxury.
Here’s a look at some of the costs you’ll see.If you plan to rent a two bedroom house in a location such as Corozal, you will pay about $300 per month. If you plan to live in a nicer, more North American style house, you will pay $800 a month.
Entertainment is very affordable.Movie tickets are about $5 a piece in Belize City (one of the more expensive areas) and a drink at the bar will likely run you about $3.Getting around is expensive if you plan to drive your own car (about $5 per gallon of gas) but if you use the bus or ferry services, which are widely available, you can pick up a pass for about $2.A taxi will cost you about $3 from one place to the next in Belize City.
With these thoughts, the cost of living in Belize for the average individual renting a standard two bedroom apartment would be about $1500 a month in a city such as Corozal or Cayo. This assumes that you would be living on mostly Belize local foods without too many lavish entertainment options.
